Essay checklist


1. Have I answered the question?

  • Do I understand what the question is asking for?
  • Have I done enough research to be able to carefully answer the question?
  • Have I answered the question that was set (not the question I'd like to answer!)?
  • Have I made it clear how my essay relates to the question?


  • 2. Does my introduction:

  • set the topic against a wider background?
  • clarify my understanding of the question?
  • define key or problematic terms?
  • outline my approach to the question and the areas I'll cover?


  • 3. Does the main body of my essay:

  • cover all parts of the question?
  • present the key points clearly?
  • support my key points with facts, evidence or examples, as appropriate?
  • clearly cite references to other sources?


  • 4. Does the conclusion:

  • bring together the main points?
  • link back to the question?
  • clearly state my conclusions?


  • 5. Is my writing correct at the level of:

  • spelling?
  • punctuation?
  • grammar?

  • 6. Does the essay read clearly throughout?

  • Is it organised into paragraphs?
  • Is there a clear structure?
  • Does every sentence make sense?


  • 7. Does the essay meet my tutor's requirements?

  • Have I word processed my essay in 12 point font?
  • Is my essay double-spaced?
  • Have I left wide margins, for feedback?
  • Have I written 1500-2000 words?
  • Have I given a full reference (including page numbers) for all direct quotations?
  • Have I accurately listed all the sources I've cited in a reference list?
  • Is my reference list formatted in APA style?
  • Have I filled in a cover sheet and attached it to the front of my work?
