Postgraduate Funding in Psychology (PPLS)

 

This page gives information on two types of funding. The section on studentships and scholarships is aimed at those considering study for an MSc or PhD in PPLS at Edinburgh.

The section on research support lists sources of funding for students currently studying in PPLS; these are sources of funding for participant fees, conference travel, and similar activities.

Studentships and Scholarships

ORSAS(Formerly ORS)

The ORSAS award covers the difference between overseas and home fees. Students have to meet their own maintenance costs.

Preferred; 19 January 2005: final deadline; 4th February 2005.

ESRC +3 and 1+3 awards

Eligibility
UK or EU citizens applying for the MSc by Research (Psychology) or MSc in Psycholinguistics followed by a PhD, or for a 3 year PhD programme after taking an ESRC approved 1 year masters programme. Details of approved courses (which include the MSc by REearch and MSc in Psycholinguistics) can be found on the ESRC Website.
Deadline for +3
Usually 1st May to ESRC, but effectively early April to the PPLS School in Edinburgh so we can process your application in time for the dealine.
Deadline for 1+3
The school holds some quota awards which it can distribute to outstanding candidates. There is also a competition award which is operated in the same way as the +3 award. Please see the Language at Edinburgh Website for details. This will be updated for the 2005 awards when ESRC issue this year's guidelines and deadlines.

College of Humanities and Social Science Postgraduate Research Awards:

There are two types of awards: studentships and scholarships. A studentship pays home rate fees and approximately £s;7000 maintenance per annunum. A scholarship pays home rate fees only. Both can be awarded to overseas students, but they are expected to meet the remainder of the overseas fee element (one possibility for obtaining the extra funding is an ORSAS award).

Students of all nationalities applying to the MSc by Research or PhD programmes.

Usually early March.

Research support funding

Bench Fees Fund

Students in psychology can apply to the Psychology Bench Fees Fund to help support and promote research work (e.g., the fund might be used to pay participant fees, attend conferences, or visit other scholars). The Bench Fees policy and application document has details of deadlines and restrictions on applications.

PPLS Small Grants Fund

All PhD students in PPLS can apply to the PPLS Small Grants Fund to help support and promote research work (priority is given to support of conference attendance). The PPLS Small Grants policy and application document has details of deadlines and restrictions on applications.

ESRC RTSG Fund:

PPLS PhD students who receive an ESRC studentship have a substantial research training support grant held in their name by the school. They can claim from the ESRC RTSG Fund to help support and promote their research work (e.g., pay for participant fees, attend conferences, visit other scholars).
