This is the home page for Ed Hopkins. I’m a professor in the School of Economics, University of Edinburgh.

My PhD is from the European University Institute, in Florence, Italy, where I returned as a Jean Monnet Fellow in 2001.  I have also been a visitor at the University of Pittsburgh, UC Santa Barbara and Caltech. See my full CV here.

Research

I work in game theory and have two main interests. The first is applying game theory to social issues, with a particular focus on the importance of rank and status and their relation to inequality. The second is the theory of learning in games. I have also been involved in experiments to test some predictions of learning theory.

Conferences

Together with Ravi Kanbur, I organised a conference on “Relativity, Inequality and Public Policy” that was held in Edinburgh in June 2009.  Earlier, I organised a workshop in behavioural economics held at Edinburgh June 2007 and one on social economics held at Edinburgh October 2004. Some information can be found here and here respectively.

Other

I am director of the Behaviour, Incentives and Contracts (i.e. micro theory) programme of SIRE (Scottish Institute for Research in Economics).  SIRE is a collaborative venture between 10 universities in Scotland. It has already led to many new appointments at the participating economics departments, and continues to support a range of activities, including seminars, conferences and workshops.

I am also PhD director for the School of Economics at the University of Edinburgh.
