This research is being carried out in the School of Arts, Culture and Environment by Arnold Myers, the Director of the University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, collaborating with Frank Tomes, Lance Whitehead, Niles Eldredge, Bradley Strauchen, and other scholars.

The project is original research into the manufacture, design and production of brasswind instruments in Britain, based on a detailed comparison of surviving instruments, archival records, and contemporary published sources.
