Research on British Brasswind History
This research is being carried out in the School of Arts, Culture and Environment by
Arnold Myers, the Director of the
University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments,
collaborating with Frank Tomes, Lance Whitehead, Niles Eldredge, Bradley Strauchen,
and other scholars.
The project is original research into the manufacture, design and
production of brasswind instruments in Britain, based on a detailed
comparison of surviving instruments, archival records, and contemporary
published sources.
Request for Information
As part of the research into some British brass instrument makers, I and am trying to
locate examples of their work surviving in collections, and would be
pleased to hear of any brass instruments by:
- Besson (serial number below 192569)
- C. Boosé
- Boosey & Sons
- Boosey & Co
- Boosey & Hawkes (bell serial number below 192569)
- H. Distin (British period of work only)
- Distin & Co
- Köhler
- Rudall Carte
The basic information needed is model, bell serial number and pistons
serial number.
From the serial numbers I may be able to help you with information about
at least some of these instruments.
