I am a member of the Moray House School of Education in the College of Humanities and Social Science, located within the Higher and Community Education section. My appointment is as Senior Lecturer. My primary teaching responsibilities are on the MSc in eLearning taught (online and by "distance" learning) within the School.

Until 2008 I was a part-time member of the University's Centre for Teaching, Learning & Assessment (TLA) paying particular attention to learning technologies and undergraduate IT literacy. Through this work I have developed close links with colleagues in the University's Information Services, and retain links with colleagues in TLA.

My background is in psychology, and I taught in (as it was then) the University's Department of Psychology for a number of years. The teaching of psychology in the University is now located within the School of Philosophy, Psychology & Language Sciences of the College of Humanities and Social Science.

The Higher and Community Education section is based in Paterson's Land at the University's Holyrood Campus which lies between the Royal Mile (at the Cannongate end toward Holyrood Palace) and Holyrood Road.

Finding Us

Some University campus maps can be found on the University web pages; we are No 6 on the Central Area map. The surrounding area can be viewed on a street map from multimap.com, or if you prefer, Google Maps. Look down on us with Google Earth.

Here are some directions for finding Paterson's Land.

Arriving by car

The Holyrood Campus lies between the Canongate (the east end of the Royal Mile) to the north and Holyrood Road to the south, about quarter of a mile west of the Palace of Holyrood House. Make for Holyrood Road, then into St John's Street, turning left off Holyrood Road if you are travelling east (towards the Palace). Turn left up St. John's Street and enter the carpark area by the gate on the right (two thirds of the way up the street). To the left (north) is Old Moray House, straight ahead is Thomson's Land, and Paterson's Land is on the right (south).

Having said all that, parking is restricted on the Campus, so it will be best to park on a metered space on the street (if only staying for a short time) or in the NCP carpark at St John's Hill which is about 200 yards west of the Campus along Holyrood Road towards St Mary's Street and The Pleasance.

Walking / cycling / driving from the rest of the University

I will assume that you can find your way to the foot of the Pleasance, where the Pleasance continues up the hill and becomes St Mary's Street, and meets the Cowgate going west and Holyrood Road going east. Turn east along Holyrood Road (towards the Palace) passing Gullan's Close (a narrow lane) on the left, to the next left turn which is St. John's Street. The building on the east side of St John's Street, where it joins Holyrood Road, is Paterson's Land. Turn left up St. John's Street and enter the carpark area by the gate on the right (two thirds of the way up the street). To the left (north) is Old Moray House, straight ahead is Thomson's Land, and Paterson's Land is on the right (south).

We have seen excelllent upgrading of the cycle parking facilities at the Holyrood Campus recently. One set of racks is located to the left hand side of the ramp down to the main door of Paterson's Land.

Walking from Waverley Station

Leave the Station by the walkway past platforms 20 & 21 which exits onto Market Street. Turn to the left and walk under North Bridge and continue along to the end of Market Street (East Market Street as it becomes). Turn right at the end, onto New Street, and walk uphill to the end of New Street where it joins the Royal Mile (Canongate at this point). Cross the road and turn left (downhill); the entrance to the Holyrood Campus is off St John's Street which can be reached under an archway off the Cannongate about 100 yards down. Walk through the archway and down St.John's Street past the Education Library on the left (with a ramp up to the entrance) and turn left into the carpark area. To the left (north) is Old Moray House, straight ahead is Thomson's Land, and Paterson's Land is on the right (south).

At Paterson's Land

Enter by the automatic doors and climb the few steps (8) straight in front of you. The double fire doors to your left lead into the Centre for Teaching, Learning & Assessment. My office is Room G.15. Walk straight ahead, following the corridor as it turns right, then about half-way along the corridor in front of you there is a small group of three offices of which mine is the one in the middle. .
