I'm a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. Previously, I was an assistant professor at Bowling Green State University.
I received my PhD from the Australian National University (2005). I also have a BA (1998) and an MA (2000) from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, my country of origin. For more details, see my CV.
My research interests are primarily in ethics. Some projects I'm presently pursuing are the following:
- Normative mereology. In what ways might the normative properties of a whole, e.g. its being good or its being a reason, be related to those of its parts? Two opposing views on this issue are atomism and holism.
- Population ethics. By what moral principles, if any, should one act when one's actions affect who exists?
- Consequentialism. Is it a substantive question whether we ought to maximise the good?
I'm a contributor to PEA Soup, a blog dedicated to Philosophy, Ethics, and Academia.
