Synthesis Training for a Chemical Biology Approach to Drug Design

Centre Coordinator : Dr Alison N. Hulme

Marie Curie EST Fellows: Laura Lopez (Spain), Geraldine Escher (France), Benoit Gourdet (France), Jill Hanna (Ireland), Conny Johansson (Sweden), Felicia Landi (Italy), Anne Caniard (France), Philip Dorgan (Ireland), Stefan Esswein (Germany), Stephan Ohnmacht (Germany), Leszek Rupnicki (Poland).

Training: The establishment of a Marie Curie EST centre for Synthesis Training for a Chemical Biology Approach to Drug Design (Syn4ChemBiolDrug) at the University of Edinburgh is a response to the increasingly pivotal role played by chemical biology in the design of new medicines, and aims to equip early stage researchers (<4 years postgraduate experience) with the requisite skill-set essential for future breakthroughs in drug discovery. Fellows will be given the opportunity to attend practical and theoretical training courses in synthetic chemistry and chemical biology. They will develop these skills in the pursuit of a research project which spans the two disciplines, developing excellent synthetic skills, but also spending a significant proportion of their time pursuing cross-disciplinary research.

Research Themes: Four research themes have been identified which span synthetic chemistry and chemical biology, allowing EST Fellows to engage in activities central to each of these disciplines:
